Merck & Co. announced today that it has licensed its Proscar for hair loss treatment in France for the first time in more than 60 years. The FDA has also approved Merck’s Proscar in Europe for hair loss treatment for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or androgenetic alopecia. Proscar was the first oral finasteride approved by the FDA for BPH. In clinical trials, Merck had shown it was able to reduce hair loss by 50% and in some cases even 50% in some cases.
Merck’s Proscar was approved by the FDA in 1997 and received FDA approval for hair loss treatment in 2002. The drug is also approved for the treatment of male pattern baldness in Europe, the most common form of hair loss in men, or BPH. In a study of more than 400 men, researchers found that Proscar reduced hair loss by 25% and in some cases, by 50% compared to a placebo.

It appears that the FDA’s decision to allow Merck to market Proscar was not a result of Merck’s desire to get FDA approval to treat male pattern baldness, but rather was Merck’s desire to get a different type of drug for hair loss that was approved by the FDA. The fact that the FDA has not approved Merck’s Proscar in the U. S. does not mean it will be approved for hair loss in Europe, as we know, but that there is a possibility that Merck may be.
